Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that they have made no progress in the investigation of Habib Hasan Assegaf in connection to the alleged sexual abuse of male students. He said that existing evidence was not enough to connect Habib Hasan with the alleged crime.
"We are still in the middle of analyzing the evidence and statements gathered during the investigation. We intend to gather more supporting evidence, if any, that will connect the dots," he told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
The statement was made in response to criticisms regarding the efforts of police in tackling the case.
Rikwanto said that Habib Hasan's legal status was still a witness.
Habib Hasan's lawyer, Hadi Sukrisna, said that his client had been continually cooperating with the police and would be available for future questioning, if needed. Hadi also said that Habib Hasan was still busy preaching.
"In fact, Habib Hasan has just returned from a minor hajj in Mecca," he said.
He said that his client was last questioned by police a month ago.
Criminologist from the University of Indonesia, Bambang Widodo Umar, said that the police should not rely on manual methods when tackling the case.
"The police need to be very careful in tackling a sexual abuse case like this. They should be patient in garnering evidence from the crime sites in order to gather all of the significant evidence," he said.
Thirteen former students in Habib's Nurul Musthofa Koran recital group have filed reports with the police over charges of sexual abuse. Besides the victim's statements, it is believed that the police also possess a copy of a Facebook conversation between the Habib and his students.
