Book proving Persian origin of "The Thousand and One Nights" published

TEHRAN -- A book written by prominent filmmaker and writer Bahram Beizaii, presenting proofs and documents that "The Thousand and One Nights" is of Persian origin, has recently been published in Tehran.

The book, entitled "Where Are Thousand Legends?", will be unveiled during a ceremony at the Iranian Artists Forum on Friday.

The author has tried to change this wrong attitude that the stories of "The Thousand and One Nights" is a collection of Arabic tales, proving that they are rooted in Persian history, the Persian service of ILNA reported on Wednesday.

"The Thousand and One Nights" is a collection of Oriental stories of uncertain date and authorship whose tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sindbad the Sailor have almost become part of Western folklore.

Several scholars are invited to make speeches at the ceremony, including Mohammad Rezaii-Raad and Hamid Amjad, giving some details about the book and the reasons why Beizaii has chosen to write the book, director of Roshangaran and Women Studies Publications said on Wednesday.

"Where Are Thousand Legends?" is actually an extract from Beizaii's wide research over the years, she said.

Beizaii has conducted the research based on the historical texts, some of which are driven from the books written by Iranian scientists who used to focus on cultural issues in older times, she said, adding that a pictorial message from Beizaii, who is not in Iran for the time being, will also be shown to the participants.

Published by Roshangaran and Women Studies Publications, copies of the book are also offered at the program with a 20% discount.

Considered as one of the most intellectual auteurs in Iranian cinema, Beizaii has written and directed several films including "When We Are All Asleep", "Killing Mad Dogs", "Travelers", "Bashu, the Little Stranger", "Death of Yazdgerd", "The Journey" and "The Downpour".
